The Distinguished Alumni Award is an honor bestowed on an alumnus/a by FIU Alumni in partnership with FIU's colleges and schools. This award is presented to alumni who have reached a high level of success in their career and have made a significant contribution to the university. Call for Nominations In 1972, Florida International University dedicated the Torch of Knowledge, Service and Understanding to the memory of the late Ernest R. Graham, the forward-thinking senator who championed the University’s creation. FIU Alumni established the Torch Awards to honor the successful individuals who have had a positive impact on their profession, the community and the University. The alumni who are selected represent FIU’s finest – they are Torchbearers. We are pleased to announce that the nomination forms are now available for the 19th Torch Awards. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025 in the Graham Center Ballrooms at FIU. FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI AWARD Recipient Selection Criteria: 1. Recipients MUST be present to receive the award. The award may not be conferred in absentia, however it may be granted posthumously. Must have graduated in good standing from FIU. 2. Demonstrates distinguished professional achievement, leadership and/or service to FIU or the larger community. 3. Made significant contribution and/or have advanced his/her profession through practice, research, education and/or administration. 4. Must not be involved in any current legal investigation or proceeding. 5. Cannot be actively running for public office. 6. Must be living at the time the nomination is submitted. 7. Must not be a previous Torch Award recipient. 8. Must have made a philanthropic gift to the university. College/School Responsibilities: 1. Must have an established relationship with the nominee. 2. Must confirm availability and interest prior to submitting a nomination form. 3. Must submit an unofficial high-resolution headshot and 150-word biography with the application. 4. Must submit a brief explanation of the nomination. Conferring of Award: Submission of this nomination form does not guarantee selection. - A University-wide selection committee comprised of senior University and volunteer leadership has been established to select the 5 Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award honorees to present to the President for final approval. - Torch Awards will be presented at the Torch Awards Reception by the president of Florida International University, the executive director of the FIU Alumni and/or the president of the FIU Alumni Board of Directors. - The person(s) responsible for submitting the nomination, family and friends of the recipients are encouraged to attend the awards reception. 1. A high-resolution head shot and 150-word biography must be submitted with the nomination. 2. A curriculum vitae and/or resume will be accepted in addition to the above documents.
