Student Eligibility Checklist
Students must meet the following requirements to be eligible for the grandparent waiver. Students are only eligible to receive this waiver starting in their first year of enrollment.
Please review carefully and confirm that you meet each criteria prior to moving forward to next steps.
1. Have a grandparent who is a legal resident as defined in s. 1009.21(1), F.S.
a. The term “grandparent” means a person who has a legal relationship to a
student’s parent as the natural or adopted parent or legal guardian of the
student’s parent.
2. Earn a high school diploma comparable to a Florida standard high school diploma,
or its equivalent, or complete a home education program.
3. An SAT/ACT/CLT combined score no lower than the 89th national percentile on the SAT. Though the term “national” appears in the statute, the intended percentile corresponds to the “SAT User” percentile.
4. Enroll as a full-time undergraduate student in the summer or fall term immediately
following high school graduation and continuously enroll full-time every fall and
spring term until the requirements for the bachelor’s degree have been completed.
5. FIU awards the grandparent waiver according to the following guidance:
Qualifying applicants with completed documents listed above in section 1-4 will be notified via email and granted on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum allocation provided by the state.
Applicants who do not qualify will be notified email address provided.
Waiver is applicable for up to 110 percent of the number of required credit hours of the degree program for which the student is enrolled.
Waiver may not be applied retroactively.

Grandparent residing in FL
Student must have a grandparent who is a legal resident as defined in s. 1009.21(2)a., Florida Statutes. The term “grandparent” means a person who has a legal relationship to a student’s parent as the natural or adopted parent or legal guardian of the student’s parent.
** Florida residency proofs are required.

High School Diploma
Students must earn a high school diploma comparable to a Florida standard high school diploma, or its equivalent, or completes a home education program.

Test Scores
Student must achieve an SAT, ACT, or CLT combined score no lower than the 89th national percentile as determined by the FL Board of Governors.

Did you earn a minimum test score of a 1330/SAT, 29/ACT, or 95/CLT ? *

Full-time Enrollment
Student must enroll as a full-time undergraduate student in the summer or fall term immediately following high school graduation and continuously enroll full-time every fall and spring term until the requirements for a bachelor’s degree have been completed.
*** The student must maintain continuous, full-time enrollment in each term to maintain waiver eligibility. Summer enrollment is not required to maintain eligibility for the waiver.

Current Status
You must be admitted to FIU prior to submitting your Grandparent Waiver request. If submitted prior to admissions, you may be asked to reapply.
*Note: This waiver is applicable to entering undergraduates beginning in Summer/Fall 2022 forward.
