Summer 2020: Stories From Our Students (Details)
This photo reflection project will deal with capturing this moment in history and telling YOUR story during this hectic and historic summer. How are you spending this time? Who are you spending it with? Where are you spending your time? We are looking for students who can see the beauty in the mundane and capture it in an instant. We want to know your perspective on the events of 2020.
How does this work?
10 applicants will be selected from a pool of FIU students and will receive ONE disposable film camera with 27 exposures on it. You must use these wisely. You'll be challenged to really think about the images you would like to capture. Questions such as what/who/how will be guided by your own experience. No prior photography skills necessary!
Once the 10 applicants are selected and they receive their disposable camera, they will have TWO weeks to capture the moments they see fit. The reason we want to use film cameras is because you won't be able to see what the picture looks like. It's uncertain what the image shows? and if you captured the moment you wanted to capture. But that is the point. Just like these uncertain times, we do not know what lies ahead. But we encourage you to appreciate and to document how your reality is unfolding. Please worry about the results later and try to focus on the feeling.
After you've captured your 27 exposures, you will mail the camera back to us, and we will develop/scan your images. Once we return them to you, you will be given a reflection prompt. We would like you to really think about the images you captured, reflect on the moment we are living in, and tell us your story.
Once we receive your reflection, you will be invited to join the Honors College podcast, "More Than a Major" to read your reflection and do a short interview on your experience.
Expectations if selected:
1. Take 27 exposures that capture your story from the disposable film camera
2. Write a reflection (approximately 500 words) once you receive your images
3. Participate in a podcast episode to discuss your experience and your story.
4. Zoom Meeting to welcome applicants and explain camera usage/project (date TBD)
